FAQ: Leak-Proof Period Swimwear
WUKA period swimwear is designed to absorb periods and little leaks whilst in or out of the water.
How does waterproof swimwear actually work?
WUKA swimwear features a built in absorbent gusset made of three unique layers. The breathable top layer is designed to feel soft and comfortable to the touch as it sits closest to to your skin. The second layer is highly-absorbent and moisture wicking, helping to absorb up to 3 tampons worth of blood. Lastly the final or outer fabric is aquaphobic meaning it is water repellent which prevents water from entering the gusset and protects against leaks. While it is safe to swim in period swimwear on your periods, we suggest using a menstrual cup or other products as backup on your heavy flow days.
Can I wear them on heavy flow days?
WUKA period swimwear is recommended for use on light to medium flow days. If you are using them to swim for long periods of time, they are best for lighter days. If however, you’re spending the day lounging by the pool with only the occasional light swim then they can also be worn on medium flow days. We do not recommend them for heavy flow days.
Can I wear the swim briefs whilst using other products?
Yes of course! For added protection on heavier flow days, we recommend wearing the swimsuit alongside a menstrual cup, disc or tampon- the more sustainable and plastic free the better!
What Material is your swimsuit made of?
As a certified B Corp that places sustainability at the heart of our brand mission, our WUKA swimwear collection is made from recycled nylon so no virgin plastic are used to make the fabric. Remember each WUKA replaces 200 disposables going to landfill.
What does UV50 protection mean?
Also known as Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF), UV protection indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a fabric allows to reach your skin. For example, our swimwear collection is made using UV50+ protection fabric which blocks 98% of the sun's rays and allows 2% (1/50th) to penetrate, thus reducing your exposure risk to harmful rays significantly.
How do I wash them?
Rinse them in cold water before washing to remove any excess blood. Wash them in the washing machine on a delicate program at 30°C maximum. Do not use any fabric softener or detergents. Air dry and never use a tumble dryer!
What sizes are the swim shorts available in?
Sizes range from XS- 2XL.
How do I know what size of Teen Swim Bikini to buy for my child?
2XS:4-6, XS:6-8, S:8-10, M:10-12. These are just for recommendation. We know all kids grow at different rates, so the best way to get the right size is measure the widest part at the hip and see our size chart to get the right size. You can always ask our customer support if you need help. Anther way to get the size right is by matching with high-street brands, if your teen wears size 4-6 opt for 2XS, if they wear 6-8 go for size XS, If they wear 8-10, go for small size.
Can I wear WUKA swim even when I am not on my period?
Your WUKA is one period swim collection is perfect for wearing in the water- whether it's by the pool, the beach or under a wetsuit. Whether you are on you period or not, they are great to use. The leakproof gusset is built into all of our period swimwear to be discreet and undetectable, so they look and feel just like regular swimwear.
Can I return my period swimwear?
Yes! All of our swim bottoms and one-pieces are eligible for a return or exchange within 30 days of delivery, as long as the original sanitary strip and tags are attached.
Is the swimwear chlorine-safe?
Yes. Our period swimwear is seawater and chlorine-resistant which helps to prevent fading and keeps your swimwear long-lasting.
I am scared that I might leak in the pool
If you have a fear of using WUKA in the pool, we suggest you use them only on your light flow day, till you gain confidence.

I'm looking forward to testing out the swim shorts next time I'm on my period! They fit well and feel really secure, and I'm so glad of a higher flow. I've used the light flow bikini bottoms before but will feel much more secure in a medium flow. These are high waisted, and the length of the short is decent too so coverage is good. I washed them today, and they felt almost dry when I took them out of the washer, so they are quick drying and seem water resistant too. No more missing out due to my period anymore! They feel really discreet and you can't see the absorbent lining at all. Keep up the good work, WUKA!

Girls! Where do I start!??
I'm not kidding when I say these swim shorts went through it all with me! I bought a pair of these before my holiday to Jamaica when I realised I would be on during the trip and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
On my heaviest day me and my shorts went swimming, CLIFF DIVING and WATERFALL CLIMBING and despite all my anxiety and visions of being surrounded by a pool of red when I dived, there were 0 leaks, 0 pools of blood, 0 stress! You couldn't even tell I was on my period! 100/10 highly recommend!

Bought a pair of these as I was going for a spa day and realised I'd be having my period and didn't want to miss out. Honestly the best thing I've bought. They matched with my swimming top I already had and looked just like normal swim wear and did a great job. No leaks and the confidence to go in and out of the pool and sauna.

I recently bought 2 of these for my holiday as it coincided with my time of the month, and I'm so glad I did. They're super absorbent, so no leaks, they're very comfortable to wear and look just like regular swim shorts, so I'm very happy with them. I'll definitely be ordering some for my daughter when she's older.

Very happy with purchase as water tight when wearing, just wish there was more size options as they only went up to XL, and a XXL would have been a better fit as the shorts rid up almost instantly due to being on the small side.
Would like more options for swim shorts other than the 2 options given, including some longer short options, as I am very self conscious in swim wear and like to cover up between mid-thigh to knee length for highest confidence levels.

I’m a size 12-14 on the bottom half (10 on the top). Bought the large as couldn’t believe u would need the largest size they do. They are very tight, especially around the legs. For a size 14, I feel I would need XL really. Shame they don’t accommodate for larger ladies. Haven’t tested the quality of the period side of things, as have them a miss and think I will return for a bigger size.

These are great and gave me confidence swimming in the sea and lounging on the beach while on my period - they are not bulky or rustly at all. LOVE the shorts style for added security and less need for shaving faff. I have only worn on a light flow day so far so I can't say I've tested them to their limits yet. Only criticism so far would be the sizing - based on other recent wuka purchases, medium has been quite big on me and small has been spot on. I'm usually approx size 10 (sometimes 12 depending). So I went for small, but they were a little bit tight / pinchy on the tum! Not a big deal and still very wearable, but I'm a bit self conscious of my tummy so next time I'd probably go medium.

I was concerned as I am a standard uk 10, I had bought another well known brand and the size 10-12 were so small I wasn’t confident that even the size up would fit. I contacted Wuka support before ordering and they confirmed a size 10-12 would be a good fit. Nervously I ordered 10-12 hoping I wouldn’t need to return. When they came they were an excellent fit, I haven’t tried them in the pool yet, but they are super comfortable and also give a bit of room for if you are bloated.

The shorts are very comfortable, and the size is accurate. However, they are not waterproof at all. I put them on and briefly rinsed only the front under the shower to test the fabric, and the underwear I left on underneath (for testing purposes) got wet immediately. The inside gusset also became heavily soaked — I had expected at least that area to stay dry, or at least less wet. The promotional video is misleading. I wouldn’t wear them in a swimming pool during my period — even on light days — because I don’t think it would be hygienic, neither for the woman nor for the water. I would send them back, but I can't. Still, they are very comfortable.

I’ve never been swimming on a period. Wuka swim shorts changed that. I was sceptical at first, and nervous of leakage. But they were great. Stayed tight and no leakage. Definitely recommend.

What an amazing pair of swim shorts these are! As someone who would always put off holidays if i knew the TOTM was at the same time, these have been a game changer. They are so flattering and actually hold a really good amount of blood ( I have a heavy flow usually ). The padding is also super discreet which is a huge bonus! Need more colours asap!
