Postpartum Bleeding
What is postpartum bleeding?
Whether you have a cesarean (c-section) or a vaginal birth, you will experience vaginal bleeding over the following days and weeks, this is called lochia. Bleeding after giving birth is the body’s way of getting rid of the extra blood, mucus, white blood cells, and tissue in your uterus.
Bleeding typically lasts around for 24 to 36 days.
Postpartum Bleeding
Following the birth of your baby, you are highly likely to experience heavy bleeding for two to three days, which will be bright or dark red in colour. You may also see some blood clots, around the size of grapes.
Around days four to seven, it is likely that you will notice your blood turning lighter and becoming pink or brownish in colour. Eventually, the blood will decrease and you will most likely see a yellow or white mucus or discharge.
It’s common for postpartum bleeding to increase if you are,
- Walking around
- First thing in the morning when you get out of bed
- Whilst breastfeeding, your body will produce a hormone called oxytocin, which stimulates uterine contractions and accelerates the healing process
- Exercising
- Straining whilst going to the toilet
Every woman is different and the length of time that she bleeds will differ, however, it is common for bleeding to last 6 weeks or possibly longer.
What to use for postpartum bleeding?
It’s important to not use tampons for some time following giving birth as this could lead to an infection. It’s important to follow your midwife and/ or doctor’s advice if they state you should use hospital-grade pads initially to monitor the amount of blood loss and clots. For those of you who have given birth, I’m sure you’ll relate to feeling uncomfortable, sweaty, and a feeling of being undignified wearing big plastic pads and pants.
“I bled a lot after my two children were born and I used the largest sanitary towels in the world during the first 2 months. I felt like I was actually wearing a nappy, a nappy that didn’t fit and stuck out so much at the front and back.”

Postpartum Recovery: Vaginal Soreness
Postpartum bleeding isn’t the only after-effect of giving birth, many women experience vaginal soreness due to vaginal deliveries, tears, and stitches. Wearing plastic pads that move around in underwear can be uncomfortable and unpleasant to wear and can cause irritation.
Choosing to wear WUKA’s underwear will allow you to have a more comfortable experience, as the pants are made from fabrics which are super breathable, soft and nice feel to your vagina.
Bladder Leaks
Women may also experience bladder incontinence after giving birth due to their pelvic floor muscles being stretched and injured during the delivery. WUKA’s pants can offer you comfort and security while taking care of light leaks.
Why you should get WUKA for Postpartum Bleeding ?
"So my beautiful baby boy was delivered by an emergency c section very unexpectedly and a little early. My WUKA were in my hospital bag and they have held up beautifully against post partum bleeding from the start. Not only that but the fabrics are soft and breathable. The midwives have been most impressed compared to the pads they were going to provide me with to help with the bleeding. Not only that but the waistband comes up above my wound/scar, meaning there is no pressure at all. A hospital bag essential for any expectant mum! Xx"
