Five tips to Make Washing Period Pants a Breeze

Worried about how to wash period pants? We’ve got you. We know that the thought of adding to an already hectic housework load is never appealing - but washing and caring for period pants is actually a lot easier than you think, even when you add teen period pants into the mix. Take the load off with our top 5 tips to make washing period pants a breeze.

How to wash period pants

We said it was easier than you think, and we meant It! Before we share our tips, here’s a really quick run-down on how to wash period pants properly.

Step one: Rinse. Always use cold water - warm temperatures will set the blood, making it harder to remove.

Step two: wash - either by hand or in the machine no warmer than 40 degrees. Skip the fabric conditioner!

Step three: dry - either on a line outside, or inside on an airer. No tumble drying!

Thats it. Three easy steps, and we’re done. Now on to the tips:

1.Rinse period pants in the shower

This is such an easy hack, and one that you and your teen can easily do. Pop them off in the shower, stomp on them a little and plop in the sink before transferring to the machine for a wash. Easy peasy!

2. Use a laundry bag to protect your pants

Your WUKA period pants will last for up to two years if you care for them properly. So along with following the wash instructions, you also want to protect them in the machine too. A mesh laundry bag is perfect to prevent your pants from getting mixed up with normal underwear, and will keep them safe during a normal cycle too. If you're washing for more than one person, loop a hair bobble on the zip so you know which bag is which.

3. Have extra pants for rotating during laundry days

We recommend at least 5 pairs of period pants for a complete cycle, but 7 pairs will lessen the load significantly. having extra pairs to hand when you need them can be a lifesaver -  after all, sometimes periods can be unpredictable, especially for younger teens and anyone going through perimenopause.

4. Share the load with your teen

Yes, teens can wash period pants too. Get them rinsing their own pants when they take them off (see tip 1 and get them rinsing in the shower!), and help them to understand the importance of planning ahead a little to make sure they have enough for school the next day.

Make sure they have two wash bags of their own - a mesh laundry bag to store used pants in ready for washing, and another bag to take to school. We recommend our two pocket change bags for this, as they can store clean pants in one pocket and used pants in the other.

5. Regular freshen ups

We use StayFresh™️ technology to ensure that our pants can be worn for up to 12 hours, depending on the flow - you know yours best, so change when you feel you need to - without odours. But we know that every now and then clothes need a little freshen up, so its totally fine to do that with your pants too. You can do this easily by adding a few drops of essential oil to some cold water and soaking your pants for an hour or so.

If you do notice an odour, it might be a sign that your pants need changing more often. Talk to your child about their flow, and how to stay fresh by changing regularly, especially if they start to feel wet.

The bottom line on washing your period pants

We get it - lots of the team here at WUKA are parents, and the last thing we want to do is add to your already overflowing laundry basket. But washing your period pants along with your normal load really does mean the switch can be seamless.

And if cared for properly, one pair of period pants can last for up to two years, taking the overall cost of yours and your child’s period right down when compared to pads and tampons.

Trust us, you won't regret adding period pants to your back to school shopping list - shop Cycle Sets and Period School Sets now and get organised for the new term.

FAQs

How often should I wash period pants?

We recommend washing your pants as soon as you can after wearing them, but if that's not possible then rinse as quickly as you can and wash when you next do a load. How often depends on how many pairs you have - the more spare pairs in rotation, the less frequent you need to put a load on. 7 pairs at least is ideal for washing every other day.

Why should I only use cold water to rinse period pants?

Hot water can damage the fabric and affect its absorbency, plus it can make it difficult to remove period blood, as the high temperature will make it stick to the fabric and ‘set’ in place. For this reason, it is vital to avoid heat altogether when it comes to caring for your period pants, so no tumble drying or ironing either.

Can you wash period pants at 40 degrees?

Yes, WUKA period pants can be washed at 40 degrees, so can go in with your normal load.
